US Battery Storage 2026: Why Contracted Projects Are Pulling Ahead of Merchant, and What It Means for Leadership
Data current to 13 October 2026.
In 2026, contracted US battery storage is pulling ahead of merchant storage. In the past month, New York awarded 950 MW, Maryland 440 MW and an Arizona utility signed a 20-year toll, while ERCOT battery revenue hit a record low of $1.11/kW-month in June. Installations set a record in Q2 by energy capacity, yet Wood Mackenzie expects utility-scale storage to stagnate through 2027. This briefing explains the split, the supply-side risks behind it, and what it changes for the commercial and finance leaders running storage platforms.
In brief
- Q2 2026 was a record quarter by energy capacity (18.9 GWh), but megawatts installed fell 7% year on year and Wood Mackenzie forecasts flat utility-scale growth until 2028.
- Contracted channels widened: NYSERDA, Maryland and APS put long-term contracts behind about 1.5 GW of new storage in four weeks.
- Merchant revenue in Texas weakened, with June 2026 ERCOT battery revenue at a record low.
- In VSP's 2026 Leadership Pay Review, storage commercial leaders who had won a state solicitation or utility toll earned a median base of $285,000, 13% above merchant-only peers.
Is US battery storage still growing in 2026?
By energy capacity, yes. By power capacity and outlook, less clearly. The US Energy Storage Monitor from Wood Mackenzie and the American Clean Power Association (Q3 2026 edition, data to Q2 2026) recorded 5.4 GW and 18.9 GWh installed in Q2. That is a record in GWh terms and up 17% year on year. Measured in GW, installations fell 7%. Utility-scale contributed 4.7 GW and 17.6 GWh, with megawatts down 8%.
Wood Mackenzie forecasts that utility-scale storage will stagnate in 2026 and 2027 before growing about 11% a year from 2028. "Record" is accurate for energy capacity only. It is not evidence of an accelerating market.
SEIA and Benchmark publish a separate storage dataset using a different method and scope. The two sets of figures should not be mixed.
Where is contracted storage demand coming from?
A contracted project sells its capacity under a long-term agreement, such as a state solicitation award or a tolling agreement, in which a utility pays a fixed fee for the right to dispatch the battery. A merchant project earns whatever the wholesale market pays.
| Event | Date | Detail | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| NYSERDA Bulk Energy Storage awards | 23 Sep | 950 MW across 8 projects from 46 bids totalling about 6 GW; four to eight-hour systems; payments start at COD | NYSERDA |
| Maryland bulk storage awards | 1 Oct | 440 MW / 1,760 MWh against an 800 MW target; 15-year flat pricing; awards conditional | Maryland PSC, via Utility Dive |
| GridStor White Tank financing | 21 Sep | $220M for 100 MW / 400 MWh under a 20-year APS tolling agreement | Energy-Storage.News |
| Foss & Company tax equity in GridStor Gunnar | 7 Oct | $58M partnership-flip tax equity for 150 MW / 300 MWh in Texas | Foss & Company |
NYSERDA's award is the first of three solicitations towards 3 GW, with a second due by year-end. Maryland's second round opens by 1 January 2027. Utility plans point to more potential volume. Ameren Missouri's integrated resource plan includes 2,400 MW of storage by 2030, and DTE's includes 4.5 GW, around 1.7 GW of it long-duration. These are plans, not approvals.
The New York result is the clearest signal. Roughly six times more capacity bid than was awarded. The constraint is access to a contract, not appetite to build.
How much are merchant batteries earning in ERCOT?
Less than a year ago. Modo Energy data show ERCOT battery revenue at a record low of $1.11/kW-month in June 2026. July came in at $1.42/kW-month, 30% below July 2025. September brought some relief, with ERCOT real-time spreads up 31% year on year.
Projects are still being financed in Texas. Linea Energy closed debt and DESRI preferred equity for its 250 MW / 500 MWh Mesa View project on 1 October. But the revenue base for a standalone two-hour merchant battery is thinner than it was a year ago.
Federal tax credits still sit underneath both models. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), signed on 4 July 2025, left the 48E investment tax credit available to storage on a longer timetable than solar and wind. What has changed is how lenders view the revenue on top of it.
In storage, the tax credit makes a project possible. The contract is increasingly what makes it financeable.
What supply-chain risks sit underneath?
Two further pressures sit on the supply side.
Fluence cut its FY2026 revenue guidance on 16 September to about $2.4 billion, from a prior midpoint of about $3.0 billion. The company attributed the cut primarily to production failures at its Houston contract manufacturer.
The Department of Energy is also writing rules under Executive Order 14421, which covers bulk-power equipment from covered foreign entities, including storage and inverters, on the 69 kV and above system. Distribution-level equipment is excluded. Holland & Knight calculates the rules are due around 24 December. Prohibitions apply only once DOE makes determinations, so this is a procurement risk rather than a ban today.
What does this mean for storage leadership and talent?
Market activity alone does not establish hiring demand. It does change what a storage platform's leadership needs to be good at.
| Merchant-led storage platform | Contracted storage platform | |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | Wholesale energy and ancillary markets | Solicitation awards, tolls and capacity agreements |
| Commercial strength | Trading, optimisation and speed to market | Bid pricing, long-term contract negotiation, state policy |
| Finance strength | Financing against revenue forecasts | Tax equity, construction-to-term debt and letters of credit against long-dated contracts |
| Key counterparties | ISO markets and trading partners | State agencies, utilities and load-serving entities |
A business competing for state solicitations and utility tolls needs:
- Bid preparation and pricing for multi-gigawatt solicitations with long-term flat-price contracts
- Negotiating tolling and capacity agreements with utilities and load-serving entities
- Regulatory and state-policy fluency across New York, Maryland and other contracting markets
- Equipment origin diligence as EO 14421 rules arrive
- Financing structures that pair tax equity or credit transfer with contracted revenue
For a platform shifting from a merchant to a contracted strategy, the commercial leader and the head of origination are the roles where that change shows first. VSP's pay data reflects the premium on that experience: storage commercial leaders who had won a state solicitation or utility toll earned a median base of $285,000, against $252,000 for merchant-only peers. Storage platforms accounted for 27% of senior offers in VSP's 2026 review, up from 16% in 2025. When execution fails, operations leadership becomes the focus.
The finance function changes too. The GridStor and Linea financings show what contracted storage asks of a CFO: tax-equity bridges, construction-to-term debt and letters of credit, sized against long-dated revenue. The Foss deal shows partnership-flip tax equity is still being written for standalone storage alongside credit transfer. A finance leader who has only financed merchant projects against revenue forecasts will find lenders asking different questions when a 20-year toll sits underneath.
For candidates, experience of winning or structuring contracted storage revenue is now a more transferable credential than merchant optimisation alone, at least while the contracted channels keep widening.
Frequently asked questions
Is US battery storage growing in 2026?
By energy capacity, yes: Q2 2026 was a record 18.9 GWh, up 17% year on year (Wood Mackenzie and ACP, US Energy Storage Monitor). By power capacity, installations fell 7%, and Wood Mackenzie expects utility-scale storage to stagnate in 2026 and 2027.
What is the difference between contracted and merchant battery storage?
Contracted storage sells its capacity under long-term agreements, such as state solicitation awards or utility tolling agreements. Merchant storage earns revenue from wholesale energy and ancillary service markets, so its income moves with prices.
How much are ERCOT batteries earning in 2026?
Modo Energy data show a record low of $1.11/kW-month in June 2026 and $1.42/kW-month in July, 30% below July 2025. Real-time spreads in September were up 31% year on year.
Which US states are contracting new bulk storage?
New York awarded 950 MW through NYSERDA on 23 September 2026, the first of three solicitations towards 3 GW. Maryland awarded 440 MW / 1,760 MWh on 1 October 2026, with a second round opening by 1 January 2027.
What experience do contracted storage platforms look for in commercial leaders?
Bid pricing for state solicitations, tolling and capacity contract negotiation, and state-policy fluency. In VSP's 2026 review, commercial leaders with that record earned a median base of $285,000, 13% above merchant-only peers.
About the data
VSP figures come from the VSP 2026 Leadership Pay Review: 142 senior offers, counter-offers and pay discussions at 63 US distributed generation, community solar, storage and IPP platforms, January to September 2026, compared with the 2025 review. "Contracted experience" means the candidate led a winning state solicitation bid or a signed utility toll or capacity agreement. Figures are median base salary.
